The Latin Treasure of the Holy Sepulcher: Art and Faith

Xavier F. Salomon, Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator of The Frick Collection, presents a lecture on the exhibition To the Holy Sepulcher: Treasures from the Terra Sancta Museum, sharing his personal experiences traveling to Jerusalem and working with the Franciscan friars who care for the objects in the show. The talk will illuminate this groundbreaking presentation of more than forty extraordinary works, including gem-encrusted liturgical objects and opulent vestments, created for the Church of the Holy Sepulcher during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Largely unknown until their rediscovery in the 1980s, these treasures represent the height of European artistry in their era and are on view in North America for the first time. Salomon will explore their fascinating history, their enduring use in Christian worship, and the remarkable story of their journey from Jerusalem to the Frick.
Tickets are $30 per person ($24 for members and students with valid I.D.). Purchase of a lecture ticket includes complimentary museum admission starting at 5:00 p.m. Only children ages 10 and older are admitted.
