The month of June is also known as Pride Month, which centers the LGBTQ+ community and its history. Pride first started as a political march in 1970 one year after the Stonewall Riots. During these riots, the LGBTQ+ community fought back and protested against police who raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City (a mere fifteen-minute walk from the Whitney). Pride now takes place all over the world and creates space for the LGBTQ+ community to feel safe, welcomed, affirmed, and celebrated.
