Ana Garcia dreams of flying away from East Los Angeles. But when her family receives a make-or-break order for 200 dresses, Ana finds herself juggling her own ambitions, her mother’s expectations, and a community of women all trying to make it work against the odds. This new musical just received two Tony Award nominations – “Best Score” for Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez’s beautiful music and “Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical” for Justina Machado’s incredible portrayal of the family matriarch, Carmen Garcia. The production has received 12 Award Nominations overall including “Outstanding Musical” nominations from both the Outer Critics’ Circle and the Drama League. Based on the 1990 play by Josefina López and 2002 HBO film of the same name, the production spotlights the LatinX community and covers several timely and important themes including immigration, feminism and sisterhood, body positivity, family, and ambition.
