May the Tide
Jessica Tawczynski
Curated by Marine Cornuet

On view: Jan. 21 – Feb. 19, 2023
Opening Reception: Sat., Jan. 21, 5-8:30pm

Much like in Lucille Clifton’s poem Blessing the Boats, whose first line inspired the exhibition’s title, Jessica Tawczynski seems to urge herself and the viewer to travel with the tide, “beyond the face of fear”. In her most recent work, the artist has created abstracted mappings on paper using painting and collage, with sculptural elements. Dark and fragmented galactic compositions spliced against cut-out details of earth’s topography give the works a depth that feels expansive. Some of the collages are fractured by gaping, intentional cuts in the paper, sewn loosely together with bungee cords, paracord rope and fishing wire: At first glance these works seem to be between a stage of healing and collapse.
