Macon Record Club: John Coltrane's My Favorite Things
Join fellow music lovers to discuss the meanings and memories of classic albums from the Brooklyn Public Library’s Vinyl Collection! At our first meeting of the new year, we’ll be discussing John Coltrane’s seminal album My Favorite Things, Trane’s first outing on the soprano saxophone, and his first alongside the geniuses McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones, who would support him on future classics such as A Love Supreme. Here Coltrane finds new purchase on standards from Porter, Gershwin, and Rogers & Hammerstein, dousing them in the “sheets of sound” that had become his calling card and great innovation.
Give My Favorite Things a few deserved spins, and join the Record Club to discuss what made it, and John Coltrane himself, so special. Make your voice heard, and hear what other fans have to say!
All of the records we’ll discuss are part of the Vinyl Collection at the Central Library. You can borrow them with your library card or listen to them at the library’s listening station! Please note that all vinyl records must be checked out from and returned at the Central Library.
