Jean-François Bouchard: The New Cubans Book Launch and Signing
On Thursday, November 15, artist Jean-Fraçois Bouchard will be launching his latest photobook, titled The New Cubans, with an artist reception and book signing at Perrotin New York, located at 130 Orchard Street in NYC.
The New Cubans, a 256-page cinematic photography book that unveils the vibrant, underreported youth culture of contemporary Cuba.
In the face of countless hardships and the ongoing migration crisis, Cuba’s younger generation is forging a bold new reality. Through the lens of photographer Jean-François Bouchard, The New Cubans offers an intimate portrayal of a community where personal expression and gender diversity flourish. The book includes an interview with former Vice photo editor Matthew Leifheit, an essay by Cuban art critic Jorge Peré, and a personal note by the photographer’s assistant and Queen of Havana Devon Ruiz. The book disrupts stereotypical images of Cuba, offering fresh insights beyond cigars, vintage cars, and Cold War history.
A solo exhibition of work from the series is currently on view at Blouin Division in Montreal through December 20, 2024.
