Scandinavia House in New York will host a virtual talk with author Barbara Sjoholm for her new book From Lapland to Sápmi: Collecting and Returning Sámi Craft and Culture on April 18, 2023 at 7:00 PM ET. She’ll discuss the book’s exploration of the cultural history of Sápmi and the Nordic countries as told through objects and artifacts.
From Lapland to Sápmi is a cultural history of Sápmi and Scandinavia told in narratives about objects and collections, with a focus on those who made duodji and other objects connected with Sami culture and those who collected and displayed such objects in private and public museums.
Deftly written and amply illustrated, From Lapland to Sápmi brings to light the history of collecting, displaying, and returning Sámi material culture, as well as the story of Sámi creativity and individual and collective agency.
The event is free. Registration is required. This event will take place as a Zoom webinar and later be available to stream.
