As part of Rutgers University–Camden’s Year of the Arts, we are pleased to present the amazing sounds of Charleston’s own Ranky Tanky—a fusion of jazz and Gullah described as “soulful honey to the ears.” The two-time Grammy winners will perform at the historic Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood, N.J., on Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Rooted in the sounds and traditions of South Carolina’s Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands, the Charleston-based quintet’s lush vocal harmonies and expert musicianship offer a unique blend of the new and the familiar. The quintet has been featured on NPR’s “Fresh Air with Terry Gross ” and NBC’s “TODAY Show” and has appeared at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and California World.
