150th Year Tribute to Samuel Coleridge – Taylor

Harlem Opera Theater will present a Tribute to Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Afro-British Composer and Conductor. He was known as the “African Mahler”. He was also known for his three cantatas in the epic 1855 poem, The song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In 1904, on his first tour to the United States, Samuel Coleridge Taylor was received by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Taylor sought to draw from traditional African Music and to integrate it into the classical tradition. Paul Lawrence Dunbar and others encouraged Samuel Coleridge-Taylor to draw from the music of the African continent.

The program will feature the classical voices of Denisha Ballew, soprano, and Antonio Watts, baritone with Gregory Hopkins,  Artistic Director on piano. The artists will present selections by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and spiritual arrangements.
